I'm interested in training my puppy to be the best he can be while working with me at my office.

Reinforcing the button and accidents

I'm back. My dog is still trying to get the hang of it and I don't know if there is much improvement, but I'm still hopeful. I do make sure to model the button and ask him to push the button before we leave. But what if he is beginning his pee, and I stop him midway so I can take him out? Should I still stop and make him push his button and risk an accident in the house? Right now, I just quickly take him out and tell him we are going "outside" and just constantly use the word "outside."Β

I'm also running into the problem where he won't push the button unless there is a chance that he will get a treat. So I'm wondering if that is delaying my progress?

How long did it take for your dog to understand the first button?

My dog quickly picked up the cue "Touch" to push the button. He is treat motivated and it didn't take long for him to understand. However, after I moved the button and added the word "Potty" on it, he no longer wants to push it, even with a treat present.Β

I don't intend to add any more buttons until he feels more comfortable pressing the first one, but I was curious to hear how long it took other people to get the hang of it. We are hitting only week 2 of training.

And yes, I do understand it takes time. I guess I just get eager as I want to have results by March...although he doesn't know that.
