We are relatively new to the button game but looking forward to expanding communication as far as we can take it.

How long should I try before giving up?

We have been trying this button thing with little success for the past six months. We have tried the target training, we have done the modeling, as far as I know we have been doing all the suggestions people on here say to do. It just seems like she doesn’t want to do it. And I tell her use your words and she just stomps on them randomly like she is throwing a tantrum. When I try to get her to watch me modeling them she will most of the time intentionally look away. And then when she does use them she claws at them and sends them flying across the room. It’s like watching a cat flick items off a ledge while staring at you.Β
This whole process just makes me feel so angry and frustrated with my dog. I don’t know if I am the only one feeling like this. I just want to know how to decide if this is something that I am wasting time on or if it’s something that just requires more patience.Β
Sophie is definitely smart enough for this she just doesn’t seem to care much for what I want from her unless doing the thing can be immediately exchanged for food. I hope this doesn’t come off too whiny but I feel at wits end with this process.Β
So is it time for us to move on?

New Problem with the new board

πŸ‘‹ πŸ₯ˆ πŸ₯‡ πŸ• πŸ—ƒοΈ πŸ—¨οΈ
You might remember a few weeks ago or more I posted about Sophie having trouble converting to the new board and also having problems with precision with the smaller buttons. We have been persevering and getting better. Sophie is getting back to using the buttons more enthusiastically like she did before we switched from learning resources to fluent pet.Β
Now the problem is that the buttons won’t stay in the hex tiles when she claws at them. Sometimes when they get pried out the buttons get reset too so that’s super fun. I always make sure I put them back in lock when I push them back into the board. I have labeled them so I know what they are supposed to be but it’s just annoying to have to reset them all the time when they are supposed to be β€œlocked”.
Has anyone else had their dog so vigorously using the buttons they go flying? If so what solutions have you found?Β
Anyone else for that matter do you have any ideas so I don’t have to go chasing buttons all over?Β

Problems with transitioning

Hi everyone I would like some help. Sophie had four LR buttons and we have now consolidated the buttons to the FP and on the hextiles she isn’t showing any interest in using them. She has even resorted to just barking at me and then staring at whatever she wants. I have tried modeling the buttons. And she won’t use them. I will tell her to use her words and she knows that means press a button and she will just go press random buttons. I tried just following whatever button she pressed as in she pressed outside and she meant carrot. I put her outside and no carrot. She press water and she meant outside. I refill the water bowl. It just ends up in us both being frustrated and lots of sassy protest barks at me from Sophie.Β
Any help would be nice.Β
Also prior to switching to FP she was using them consistently and appropriately.Β

Need help with consolidating buttons

πŸ‘‹ πŸ₯ˆ πŸ₯‡ πŸ• πŸ—ƒοΈ πŸ—¨οΈ
Sophie and I have been working at this whole button thing for the past four months. At first she was very content to have me press the buttons and didn’t seem at all interested in communicating with me. We have four buttons and the twelve button six hex mat fluent pet kit is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Right now we have outside, water, carrot and all done. She is using them appropriately and often now so it seems like we have reached stage four? where you move the buttons to a centralized location. So here is my questions do I move the outside button to the mat/soundboard or leave it by the back door? Where should I put the tiles/soundboard in my house? How long should I wait before adding another button once I consolidate the buttons to a soundboard?Β  What are some things or tips to keep in mind for consolidating the buttons? I know there will be a learning curve but I don’t want to reinvent the wheel so to speak if I don’t have to. Thanks in advance!Β
