Hi! I am a retired Elementary Teacher and Publication Manager for Scientific Publications. I love to spend time with my family and going on visits with my Therapy dog, Sadie.

How do I review my word inventory?

I’ve not been great at keeping track of which words I have added to the inventory and which button pushes I have reported for first pushes. Is there an easy way to check and review the things I have submitted?Β  Thanks!

Consolidating buttons

I received our FP buttons and hextiles about 2 weeks ago. Sadie has definitely taken a step back but it has been fascinating to watch her think about what she is doing when she goes over to her sound board. We have days when she is very deliberate about what button she wants to push, other days when she isn't interested in using them at all, and then other days when she pushes any and all the buttons when she wants something. A couple of days ago, it was clear from her body language that she wanted a treat. I ignored her until she went over to her board. She pushed each button, one at a time and would look at me each time. I responded by reinforcing whichever button she actually pushed (opened the door when she pushed 'outside', gave her scritches when she pushed 'scritches' etc.) Between each button push Sadie would stare intently at the board and I could see that she was really thinking about what to do next. When she finally pushed the 'treat' button and heard it, she looked up, went to the pantry door, and wagged her tail. She realized that she had finally pushed the button she had been looking for and seemed quite proud of herself! So fun to watch the gears turning. I am still having to do lots and lots of modeling and some days I wonder but I know she will get there. I know she is really beginning to see the sound board as a good thing. Whenever I pick it up to clean under it or add a button she comes over to check on what I am doing and gets a bit agitated about it. As soon as I put it back down she relaxes and goes on her merry way. Now we just need to get the button placement solid in her mind and get the consistency going. Patience and modeling and it will come!!

Transferring to a board

πŸ‘‹ πŸ₯‰ πŸ₯ˆ πŸ₯‡ 🎬 πŸ”˜ πŸ—ƒοΈ πŸ—¨οΈ πŸ•
Hi everyone,
I really need some help and advice. Sadie is a 3 year old Standard Poodle and is a trained therapy dog. I started using buttons in September, starting with β€œoutside”. When Sadie was using it consistently I added treat, park, and ball. She was using them fairly consistently after about a month so I moved them all to a board. Since then I feel like we have gone backwards. Sadie will no longer push them spontaneously. Or, she will just push random buttons no matter what she wants. (Usually just the outer ones) She will push a button if I model and then ask her to push it but she seems to get a little stubborn about it sometimes. (This has been a pattern with her learning from day 1 with most anything) πŸ˜‚ Sadie learns quickly and also quickly becomes bored or stubborn about repeating them. She wants to go back to her β€œusual” way of communicating her needs. Eg, standing at the door until we come to let her out rather than pushing her button. I am waiting for my hextiles to come and am wondering how to proceed from here. Should I take the buttons off the board and go back to the drawing board while waiting for our new buttons? Since joining here I’ve also realized that adding β€œpark” and β€œball” was not a good idea. These words are too excitable for Sadie. I’m wondering if going back to the beginning using only the β€œoutside” button is the best way to go? Thanks for any suggestions or help!!
