I'm just a normal person who loves animals & wants their dogs to be happy.

β€œBilly is stuck in the well” tactic & new buttons

Oscar is an 8 yo mixed breed. He’s very smart when it benefits him. He’s always been very communicative. We’ve used a bell for the back door since he was a puppy. Eventually he started using the bell to get my attention for anything.

He rings the bell, when I get up to go let him out, he back away from the door making sure I’m following him. Then he walks into the kitchen trying to get a treat. I try not to give him too many treats as he has a tendency to be overweight & he would ask for treats all the time.

The other way he tells me he wants something is to come up to me when I’m sitting on the couch & burying his head in my chest. It seems sweet at first, but it is really because he wants something.

We only have 2 buttons so far: Outside & water. He took to the outside button right away. I thought he would still use the bell for the wants, but he’s already started using the outside button as he would the bell. He still hasn’t used the water button.

I think I need to introduce new buttons, but I’m not sure what they should be. I was thinking β€œOscar” & β€œwant” might be good buttons to introduce. Or maybe β€œall done”? He doesn’t really play? β€œPats” or β€œloves” could be good. Like I said above, he uses that behavior when he wants something else.

I’m really excited to β€œhear” what he has to say because he communicates in so many ways already. I would love to be able to understand him better.

Thanks,
Julia & Oscar
